- the building plot type (on a housing development or on a separate plot by itself)
- the location of utilities (water, electricity supply, telephone, sewerage)
- noise pollution/environmental issues (area prone to flooding, the general neighbourhood, presence or future likelihood of presence of factories, discos, dog kennels, motorway traffic)
- the location of nearby shops or schools
- accessibility issues and the local public transport service
- the orientation and location of listed buildings in the care of the state-run Architectes des Bâtiments de France (who have powers over what buildings are built in close proximity to these listed buildings).

You shouldn’t hesitate – and in fact, it may be necessary - to look further afield, in locations other than those you had originally envisaged, in order to find your ideal building plot.
